Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies worldwide, because iron is difficult to get and absorb in the proper amount from diet alone. At certain times your body needs significantly more because of rapid growth (during adolescence), pregnancy, breast-feeding, or at times when there are very low levels of iron in the body (such as after bleeding). The amount of iron in the human body is very small, a mere 3-5g. Though it's not much, every little bit is essential for life. |
